The Relative Unimportance of Trying to Stop Global Warming |
Bjørn Lomborg, author of Global Crises, Global Solutions argues in a recent commentary that "Instead of spending enormous amounts of money on the Kyoto strategy, which focuses on early cuts that will do little good, we should be concentrating on research into cheaper and cleaner energy". Lomborg is an adjunct professor at the Copenhagen Business School and the organizer of the Copenhagen Consensus . The latter was a very ambitious effort by a number of economists to prioritze the use of world resources in addressing global problems. Why $5 Gas Is Good for America |
 The December issue of Wired Magazine (12/2005) features a cover article that makes the excellent point that there are substantial positive aspects to high oil prices. Besides encouraging conservation — farewell to the Hummer — and more attention to global energy politics, it has also provided a shot in the arm to many of the alternative sources of energy. The author focuses mainly on the nearer term alternatives to oil, but the same arguments about high oil prices should also lead to more effort on the long term solutions, such as fusion, that could alleviate energy shortages for future generations. Most importantly, however, all the alternatives need a stable price platform to insure return on investment. The public would be best served by a variable tax for fuel that established a guaranteed price for oil and then used the taxes collected in this way to fund investment in alternatives.
